Martial Arts Program

This is an elaborate program designed by EBT program advisors for all the students who are willing to learn martial arts in its mother land. Students can choose martial arts study or choose martial arts and language study. Participants train under the guidance of China 's prominent Wushu masters and past National Chinese Wushu Champions. These highly experienced masters are dedicated to providing high quality training for all students, from total beginners to participants competing in National Wushu competitions. At the same time, for Chinese language study, we have chosen the best certificated teachers with long experience of teaching Chinese to foreigners as second language. All the EBT Wushu masters are past national Chinese Wushu Champions and have won several Martial Arts championships both in China and overseas. They usually started study the Wushu and Kongfu before the school age. The masters are also certificated teachers with professional experience of teaching Wushu to both Chinese and foreigners.

Master Meng started training in wushu as a child. From the age of 10, she commenced intensive wushu training in the Shi Hai Sports School , learning under two wushu greats ¨C Master Wu Bin (Jet Li's teacher and head coach of the Beijing wushu team) and Master Li Junfeng.

Meng shifu has represented Beijing in a number of national competitions winning the gold medal in the Dao and Fists competition forms. In 1990, Meng shi fu was trained by Bagua Master Liu Jing Ru (Traditional Bagua master and coach for the Beijing wushu team in the 1980's). She is currently ranked the Chinese National Rating: 5th Dan and is also a wushu judge.

Ding shifu is one of China 's National Wushu Champions. He specializes in several forms of wushu and has won championship titles in the competition forms. In the 1997 China National Martial Arts Championship, Ding shifu was the Martial Arts champion in the Staff 'gunshu', Longfist 'changquan' and Broadsword 'daoshu' forms and won the overall Martial Arts Champion title in the same year. Recently in the 2000 China Wushu Individual Men and Women's Championship in Fujian , Ding shifu's team won first place and he won the bronze medal in the Traditional Fist category (tongbiquan).

Born in Jining, Shandong (the 'Martial Arts province of China'), Master Ding started his wushu training early in childhood and by 8 years old he began learning the traditional fist forms such as 'Tongbiquan'. He is currently ranked the Chinese National Rating: 5th Dan

Training is held at China 's leading Capital Sports Institute. It is China 's only institute of higher sports education specifically devoted to fostering elite athletes and instructors in areas such as Chinese Wushu. This unique program provides advanced students with the opportunity to train alongside Chinese martial arts students that have been admitted to study in the Capital Sports Institute's prestigious wushu program. The institute caters for all levels, from Total Beginner to Advanced competition levels.

• Language study (For Martial Arts & Language Program Only)  ptop

This program is ideal for those who wish to combine Martial Arts training with Chinese Language studies. Language classes focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation. Topics studied include everyday situations, as well as Chinese culture, society, and history. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized to enable participants to attain communicative proficiency. Qualified and experienced teachers from the Institute teach the language classes. Non-beginners take a placement test to determine their proficiency level. Each class is 45 minutes. 10 class hours every week, 2pm - 4.30pm Monday & Friday afternoons and 2pm - 5.15pm Wednesday afternoons, from Total Beginner to Advanced

Participants are given the opportunity to learn additional martial arts forms or other aspects of Chinese culture. Electives are free and scheduled in the afternoons twice a week.

Martial Arts Focus Electives

Elective Martial Arts styles include Taiji quan and Qigong. These electives are generally held in the afternoons and the choice of styles offered differs according to each program. See description above.

Non-Martial Arts Focused Electives (For Martial Arts & Language Program Only)

Traditional Chinese Massage and Traditional Chinese Medicine: Classes introduce the ancient Chinese concepts and beliefs of what constitutes the human body and illness, and include diagnostic methods and treatments using herbal medicine and massage.

Chinese Painting: Classes introduce elements of the traditional art of Chinese watercolor painting under the guidance of a professional artist.

Calligraphy: Classes introduce the various calligraphy styles and features, participants then focus on perfecting one style of this ancient art form.

The short term program ( 4 weeks , 8 weeks , 10 weeks ) generally starts on the first Monday of every month, and the long term program ( 1 Semester , Academic Year ) starts on March 10 th and September 10 th every year.

• Language Exchange Programs   ptop

Free Language exchange programs (introduce local people as language or Martial Arts exchange partners)

Getting to know locals is an integral part of the program. It provides language Martial Arts and cultural interaction between participants and Chinese students, marking the beginning of many lasting friendships. This program provides the perfect opportunity to practice the language, Martial Arts and encourages cultural and social exchange. Participants schedule to meet with one another at their convenience.

Interaction with native speakers is an integral aspect of this immersion program. Each participant is introduced to a Chinese student as his or her language partner at the start of the program. Not only does this provide the perfect opportunity to practice Chinese and Martial Arts skills, it also fosters invaluable cultural and social exchange.

Apart from practising Chinese and Martial Arts, the language partners may engage in social and cultural activities together. This ranges from playing sports and games and visiting popular Beijing attractions, to meeting up with one another for lunch or dinner, or regular outings. This highly successful component of the program has been the beginning of many lasting friendships.

Three different kind of EBT Trips to places of interest such as YunNan , Xian, Inner Mongolia, Shanghai , Datong , The Great Wall, The Summer Palace and ShaoLin Temple are available to participants. Full package EBT trips for one day on the weekend, a whole weekend or a whole week, covering train tickets, hotel, food, English speaking guide, admission to major attractions, meals and transport are offered to EBT students. FORMS

SHORT DESCRIPTION

CHANGQUAN (Long Fist)

Consists of fighting techniques in the form of routine exercises and free sparring. Also known as long fist, the routine is practiced with or without traditional weapons. It incorporates kicking, punching, throwing and lock techniques integrated into set routines following specific rules and patterns.

NANQUAN (Southern Fist)

Consists of close range fighting hand techniques with footwork combined with kicks. Originating from the Southern Shaolin Temple, this dynamic routine emphasizes speed.

DAOSHU (Broadsword)

Consists of sweeping and spinning body movements combined with defensive and offensive sword techniques such as thrusting and blocking.

JIANSHU (Straight Sword)

Consists of defensive and offensive movements with stabbing and cutting sword moves. The focus is on speed complemented by spinning and continuous body movements.

GUNSHU (Staff)

Consists of offensive attacking techniques with the use of the staff. Techniques include strikes, thrusts, jabs and circular movements, which generate speed and strength.

QIANGSHU (Spear)

Consists of defensive and offensive spear techniques such as side-blocks, thrust and strikes.

SANSHOU (Sanda)

Consists of full contact fighting techniques with the use of protective gear (head gear, boxing gloves, groin cover and shin guards). Techniques incorporate punching, kicking, seizing, and throwing integrated into set routines following specific rules and patterns.

OTHERS

DRUNKEN STYLE, PRAYING MANTIS (Tanglang quan), BAGUA ZHANG, TUMBLING BOXING (Ditang quan), SHAOLIN QUAN (Shaolin boxing) and a range of weapon styles.

TAIJI QUAN (Taichi Chuan)

Consists of graceful, continuous movements combined with breathing control to promote relaxation, balance, flexibility, muscle tone, and coordination while improving participants' overall physical and mental agility. This ancient art, dating back to the 8th century, is based on traditional defensive and offensive techniques. In addition to bare hand techniques, weapons such as the sword, saber and spear are also used. Several schools of Taiji include the Chen, Yang, Wu and Sun. Taiji forms offered include: Yang Style 24 Movements, simplified and standardized form for beginners, and Combined 42 Movements, combining the Chen, Wang, Wu and Sun styles.

TAIJI SWORD

Complements Taiji Quan with the use of the sword as an extension of the body. Defensive and attacking sword techniques. Yang and Chen Taiji Sword Styles.

QIGONG

A form of energy exercise, consisting principally of breathing exercises and patterns. Derived from the ancient Chinese healing art, it combines slow movements with regulated and directed deep breathing to facilitate the movement of Qi (chi) throughout the body to increase vitality.
